" I’m Jake Berry, the MP for Rossendale & Darwen. If you have any views you want to share with me, or issues you need help with, please get in touch. "
I was contacted today by a voter called Margaret who had received her postal ballot and was trying to make her mind up as to who she should vote for. She had spent a couple of hours trying to find out about the candidates on the internet and suggested that I might like to put up some information about why I believe I should be your next MP.
SIR – Between us we run some of Rossendale and Darwen’s leading companies and employ many people in this area. We are responsible for ensuring that our businesses and our employees come through the recession in good shape.
Unlike the Labour party we cannot afford a flashy office on Bank Street. We are spending all our time and money contacting the voters not sipping champagne and giving out balloons. We were, however, contacted by a businessman who is fed up with Gordon Brown. He offered us his shop front for a spot of public information broadcasting!
We are continuing to contact about 1000 voters a day with our canvass team. On Wednesday night it was North Turton’s turn. The night was superb with a really good response and it finished with a pint in the Chetham Arms.
Yesterday I had a full day, starting with canvassing in Edenfield with the team, pictured above. In the afternoon, I left the team to travel to other areas of Rossendale and went to the Older Persons Forum in Darwen. I was asked to speak, with others, about the choice at this election. Gordon Brown’s Labour Party had its candidate there giving out leaflets featuring Victor Meldrew. One lady told me that every time Gordon Brown speaks, she feels like saying “I don’t believe it!†For me that was the quote of the day.
