Jake Berry MP condemns comments by Darwen Councillor Andy Kay in the Lancashire Telegraph
Last week Jake asked Blackburn with Darwen Council why it is providing trade unions with an office, IT facilities and pay for 3 trade union officials to the tune of £94,800 when Council services are facing budget cuts. Cllr Kay’s response was to attempt to brush off the question with accusations of “right wing intolerant tendencies”.
Jake Berry said:
‘There is no question that trade unions provide a valuable service to their members; that is what members pay their union subs for. I am not in any way questioning the unions’ purpose or ability, I am simply doing my duty and holding the Council to account for a £94,800 expense that, at the very least, is excessive and in my view totally unnecessary. The Council already has an HR department and local trade union representatives across various departments to deal with discussions between itself, trade unions and members of staff. If the trade unions believe that their additional presence at the Council is essential, then they should pay for it themselves rather than expecting taxpayers to pick up the tab. This is about taxpayer value for money not political ideology and to suggest otherwise is a smoke screen.’
