Jake welcomes the £400,000 facelift to Darwen railway station

Jake has welcomed the recent news that long overdue improvements, costing £400,000, are to be made to Darwen railway station in the next 12 months.

Half the money for this project will be provided by Blackburn with Darwen Council and half from ‘matched’ funding from the National Station Improvement Programme. (NSIP) The aim is to improve facilities by building better passenger shelters, installing platform ticket machines and a public announcement system, and upgrading the CCTV.

Jake commented, “I am absolutely delighted that after almost three years of talks these improvements are going ahead. In particular, the installation of platform ticket machines will deter fare dodgers and the increased level of security will discourage vandals. I am optimistic that these proposed changes will make the station a safer and more user friendly place for Darreners and visitors alike.”

Here in East Lancahire our strong Manufacturing base is leading the way out of recession and is growing strongly. The economy has created thousands of jobs since the turn of the year, and borrowing is down. The economy is rebalancing away from debt-fuelled consumption towards manufacturing, exports and investment. We have avoided the double dip recession that some were forecasting despite a big rise in oil prices.

Local MP, Jake Berry, has been invited to join them at the official opening of the Darwen Aldridge Community Academy. The Government’s flagship housing policy will bring direct benefits to Rossendale. Under the scheme, the Government is offering Councils in England extra money for every newly-built home by matching the council tax raised on each new house for six years. Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Housing minister, Grant Shapps, has been working directly on this policy. In 2011/12 Rossendale has been allocated £663,001, and Blackburn with Darwen has been allocated £614,835 which will be paid over the next six years.

After years of under investment by the Labour Government and the harsh winters of the last couple of years, Lancashire’s roads have been left in a terrible state. Mr Berry and Lancashire County Council have made great efforts to improve the local road network and prevent drivers being constantly blighted by lane closures.

Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, rededicated Hoddlesden Cenotaph on Sunday. The stone cenotaph and four matching urns were placed in the centre of the village green in the 1920s, to honour the dead from the First World War. Subsequently the names of soldiers killed in the Second World War and the Falklands War were also added.

Council Tax Freeze to Benefit Rossendale

Following the Government’s council tax freeze initiative, the final council tax figures have been released this week. Every eligible local authority in England has taken part in the Government’s council tax freeze initiative meaning average tax bills will remain frozen at £1,439 on a band D home from this April. This will mean average savings of around £79 for the people of Rossendale.

Out and About

Yesterday I had a full day, starting with canvassing in Edenfield with the team, pictured above. In the afternoon, I left the team to travel to other areas of Rossendale and went to the Older Persons Forum in Darwen. I was asked to speak, with others, about the choice at this election. Gordon Brownâ€™s Labour Party had its candidate there giving out leaflets featuring Victor Meldrew. One lady told me that every time Gordon Brown speaks, she feels like saying â€œI donâ€™t believe it!â€ For me that was the quote of the day.

Day One

Apr 8, 2010

Woke up early (6am) and went to Darwen Train Station to meet commuters getting onto the train to Manchester. I had a quick chat with a student nurse who was concerned about recruitment in the NHS. At lunch time I went to Bacup Market to chat to shoppers. I received a warm welcome from both them and from the stall holders. After lunch I then went to join our team delivering meeting in Whitwell, followed by a house meeting I Turton. Finally, I came home for dinner to see Charlotte, her dad and the dog. After dinner I went out to a campaign launch at St Maryâ€™s Chambers. All in all, a very busy day but there is more to come!
