Jake supports Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust

At a reception in Westminster to mark European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, was delighted to support ‘Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust’

Jake said, “Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust is the UK’s only charity dedicated to women, their families and friends affected by cervical abnormalities and cervical cancer, offering a range of support and information both online and face to face.

“Cervical cancer is a largely preventable disease thanks to the UK’s National Cervical Screening and HPV vaccination programme and I would encourage women and girls to take advantage of these potentially lifesaving programmes.”

Here in East Lancahire our strong Manufacturing base is leading the way out of recession and is growing strongly. We have avoided the double dip recession that some were forecasting despite a big rise in oil prices.

The Government’s flagship housing policy will bring direct benefits to Rossendale. Under the scheme, the Government is offering Councils in England extra money for every newly-built home by matching the council tax raised on each new house for six years. Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Housing minister, Grant Shapps, has been working directly on this policy. In 2011/12 Rossendale has been allocated £663,001, and Blackburn with Darwen has been allocated £614,835 which will be paid over the next six years.

The stone cenotaph and four matching urns were placed in the centre of the village green in the 1920s, to honour the dead from the First World War. Following the Government’s council tax freeze initiative, the final council tax figures have been released this week. Every eligible local authority in England has taken part in the Government’s council tax freeze initiative meaning average tax bills will remain frozen at £1,439 on a band D home from this April. Yesterday I had a full day, starting with canvassing in Edenfield with the team, pictured above. In the afternoon, I left the team to travel to other areas of Rossendale and went to the Older Persons Forum in Darwen. I was asked to speak, with others, about the choice at this election. Gordon Brownâ€™s Labour Party had its candidate there giving out leaflets featuring Victor Meldrew. One lady told me that every time Gordon Brown speaks, she feels like saying â€œI donâ€™t believe it!â€ For me that was the quote of the day.

Day One

Woke up early (6am) and went to Darwen Train Station to meet commuters getting onto the train to Manchester. I had a quick chat with a student nurse who was concerned about recruitment in the NHS. At lunch time I went to Bacup Market to chat to shoppers. I received a warm welcome from both them and from the stall holders. After lunch I then went to join our team delivering meeting in Whitwell, followed by a house meeting I Turton. Finally, I came home for dinner to see Charlotte, her dad and the dog. After dinner I went out to a campaign launch at St Maryâ€™s Chambers. All in all, a very busy day but there is more to come!
