Jake Berry MP takes part in Mums Café at Party Conference to call for greater investment in maternal health
Jake Berry MP and his wife Charlotte this week attended the Mum’s Café, created by The White Ribbon Alliance and supported by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health, to highlight the hundreds of thousands of pregnant women in many developing countries who find themselves at as great a risk of death in childbirth in 2010 as women in the UK did 100 years ago.
Mr Berry joined with organisations including Amnesty International, Save the Children, Oxfam, Mumsnet, WaterAid, World Vision, IPPF, Marie Stopes International, One and the White Ribbon Alliance to support the global campaign to end maternal and child mortality and morbidity.
Jake commented, “The numbers of women worldwide who are dying and suffering as a result of childbirth or pregnancy-related causes are unacceptable. One woman dies every minute.
“In the UK in the last 100 years we have taken great strides in improving maternal health and maternal and newborn deaths are now extremely low. We must ensure that women and children worldwide are not dying and suffering needlessly of preventable illnesses and a lack of basic healthcare.”
