Jake Berry’s Week in Parliament
Jake Berry has had a very busy week in Parliament, speaking in the House of Commons about issues affecting his constituency, such as our voting system, the Royal Mail and a transport link from Rossendale to Manchester.
Monday
Jake started the week attending an important debate on the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill, in which he spoke of the need for the Returning Officers to be given more autonomy in order to run polling stations more efficiently.
Speaking about the debate, Jake commented, “I think it is vital that Returning Officers have the freedom to make important decisions on Polling Day so that we avoid situations such as in the May General Election where you have hundreds of people being turned away from polling stations.”
Tuesday
Jake attended a National Housing Federation event on rural housing to discuss the shortage of housing for those in Rossendale and Darwen.
Jake said, “Lack of affordable rural housing is an enormous issue in Rossendale and Darwen with many agricultural workers unable to afford a home. Under the previous Government house building was its lowest level since 1923. This has created a massive housing shortage which this Government must address. I hope that all my constituents fulfil their dream of having their own home.”
Wednesday
Mr Berry attended a debate on the future of Royal Mail, highlighting the plight of rural Post Offices which has been closed down by the thousand over the course of the previous Government. Jake spoke about the former Sunnyhurst Post Office to illustrate his point and the loss of services from the Darwen and Edgworth Post Offices.
Describing the debate, Jake commented, “I am delighted to have been able to stand up for Rossendale and Darwen’s Post Offices in the House of Commons. Politicians need to understand how vitally important these shops are for the community. For the elderly who go in to sort out their pensions and savings, the Post Office is a life line and keeps them connected with the community. This is why I am whole-heartedly backing the Government’s proposals to improve Royal Mail.”
Thursday
Jake asked the Minister what steps he is taking to ensure the economic sustainability of the rail network. Philip Hammond replied that the Government is going to get the cost base of the railway under control.
Jake than asked the Minister what plans he has to create a rail link between Rossendale and Manchester for all those who commute daily.
Philip Hammond replied that he knew that “the local authorities in the area, together with Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, have been working on a scheme, for which the local sustainable transport fund that we have announced-or, alternatively, the regional growth fund-may be a potential source of funds.”
Mr Hammond added that he would be happy to meet Jake to discuss the possibility further.
Jake remarked, “I am pleased that the Minister has taken an interest in the commuter link. I believe it would provide real economic advantages to the area and improve the lives of many of my constituents who commute to Manchester every day. I will report back on what is discussed when he and I meet.”
