Higher hopes for children's ward
The hopes of Rossendale and Darwen parents got a shot in the arm today after a committee of Councillors agreed to review the planned closure of the Deerplay Children's Ward at Burnley General Hospital.
Lancashire County Council's Health Scrutiny Committee is the body responsible for examining changes in the NHS. Today, the committee's steering group cleared the decks to make room for a review of the closure proposals at a meeting on 23rd November.
Shortly after coming to power the Coalition Government put in place new rules to ensure that changes in the NHS have the support of GPs and reflect the choices of patients. Over 20,000 people have signed a petition to keep the service in Burnley, and GPs have written to MPs to object.
This public campaign has put the local service under the magnifying glass. and a cross-party selection of MPs and Councillors are now all watching intently to see how the NHS management responds.
Representatives from three layers of the NHS are being invited to attend to defend the proposals, whilst concerns will be highlighted by the 4 Pennine Lancs MPs affected.
Jake Berry MP for Rossendale and Darwin said, "I urgently want to hear from parents of children who depend on this facility, or who have used it within the last few years. I want to hear their stories, good or bad. What do they want to happen?
"I have to make sure that the committee has all the evidence it needs to make its decision. If the committee is sufficiently worried that the proposals may be damaging, the government will intervene.
"I also want to hear from GPs as they have the power to sway this decision. What do they think about this closure?
"I am absolutely opposed to the closure of Deerplay Children's Ward at Burnley. If you oppose it too, now is the time to write to me."
Parents and GPs should write to their local MP. Letters from should be sent to Jake Berry MP, 4 Mount Terrace, Rawtenstall, Rossendale BB4 8SF.
The closure of the ward is set to take place over the weekend of 3rd December, and staff have described the ward as being in 'wind down mode'.
