Jake Berry’s Week in Parliament
Jake Berry MP has been very busy in Parliament this week, tackling issues from dangerous dogs to the closure of the Deerplay Children’s Ward at Burnley Hospital
Monday
Jake received a written reply from the Minister today regarding the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Jake commented, “It’s vital that the issue of dangerous dogs is taken seriously. I receive so many complaints from constituents whose own dogs have been attacked by uncontrolled dogs in local parks. We need to be tough on this issue and strongly promote responsible dog ownership throughout the UK.”
Jake also asked the Defence Minister, Gerald Howarth MP, to make a statement on what proposals he would be putting forward to make sure NATO was modern and fit for purpose. The Minister replied that the Defence Secretary, Dr Liam Fox MP, has been at the forefront of the campaign to reduce the number of NATO personnel to about 9,000, and we hope very much that we can reduce the number of joint force command headquarters from nine to two, thereby saving money and making NATO more efficient.
Tuesday
Jake met with Gordon Birtwistle, MP for Burnley, to discuss the very important issue of the closure of Deerplay Children’s Ward at Burnley Hospital.
Jake remarked, “Many constituents use the vital services provided by the Deerplay ward. It would be an enormous mistake to close the ward, which is why I have written to all local Councillors urging them to oppose the decision. I think it is important that the Council knows that there is no support for this move, either from the public or from me.”
Thursday

Jake went to Downing Street to join campaigners in handing in a petition urging the Prime Minister to lower the age of cervical screening to 20.
Jake commented, “I know how important this issue is to women all over the UK and certainly within Rossendale and Darwen and I wanted to show my support for the cause.”
