Victory for MPs in fight for children’s ward
The Health Scrutiny Committee of Lancashire County Council has this morning backed local MPs and campaigners. The committee agreed that the decision undertaken by the Strategic Health Authority to close Deerplay Childrens Ward at Burnley General Hospital did not meet the criteria laid down by the health secretary for reconfigurations.
The decision will now be referred to the Secretary of State who may then refer it to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) who will consult on a wide range of evidence. Today’s decision has been a victory for the local MPs who have been lobbying both ministers and county councillors on this matter.
Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle was at the meeting giving evidence against the SHAs decision and was joined by Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson. Neighbouring MPs Jake Berry and Jack Straw lent their support to the cause and Jake has also been campaigning against the move.
Jake Berry MP said “We have been fighting plans to close the children’s ward for months. The new Government put down criteria that must be met for a reconfiguration to take place. I knew that the SHA hadn’t considered all these guidelines and the move lacked the support of local residents and GPs.
“Today we proved that the decision making process was wrong, next we have to convince the IRP that the actually decision is wrong. Whilst I am thrilled with today’s results the next few weeks will be crucial. I will be putting pressure on the Health ministers. It is also vital now that we have as much evidence as possible to present to the panel. Please do get in touch and let me know you’re views about the children’s ward – you’re support is vital.”
