Economy Returns to Growth
Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen, has welcomed the news that the economy has returned to growth. Here in East Lancahire our strong Manufacturing base is leading the way out of recession and is growing strongly. The economy has created thousands of jobs since the turn of the year, and borrowing is down. The economy is rebalancing away from debt-fuelled consumption towards manufacturing, exports and investment. We have avoided the double dip recession that some were forecasting despite a big rise in oil prices.
The Government has always expected the recovery to be choppy. But together with continued reminders around the world of the risks facing countries that do not deal with their debts and deficits, today’s data shows that the Government has set the right economic course.
Jake Berry commented: “As the Chancellor and the Governor of the Bank of England said last year, the recovery from the deepest recession of our lifetimes was always going to be choppy. That is even more so following the sharp rises in oil and commodity prices around the world over the last 6 months. The important thing is that the economy has returned to growth.
He added: “The government’s actions laid the foundations for recovery and this month we also saw the first fall in unemployment for nearly a year. I hope this will soon be reflected in Rossendale and Darwen’s job market which has proved remarkably resilient due to the strength of its manufacturing base. I believe the Government’s back-to-work programme will help transform this process and show people who want to work that the Government is on their side.”
