Jake Berry MP Says NO to AV
Jake Berry MP for Rossendale and Darwen: “I will be voting NO to AV on 5 May”.
Here is why you should vote NO too.
AV is a complete waste of money. It’s so confusing that we’d need a whole bureaucracy to try and explain it properly. We are talking millions of leaflets and advertising – we may even have to buy new electronic voting machines to make sense of it all. The estimated cost – millions - money better spent in our local hospitals and local schools.
AV is an obscure system. Just three countries use AV – Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Australia – and in Australia 6 out of 10 voters want to get rid of it. Compare that to our own First-Past-the-Post system, which is so simple, clear and decisive it’s used by 2.4 billion people around the world. First-Past-the-Post ensures one person gets one vote – democracy doesn’t get more democratic than that.
AV won’t fix the problems in politics. It won’t get rid of safe seats or negative campaigning, and it won’t make MPs more accountable or harder working.
If Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s wedding venue had been chosen by AV, Westminster Abbey could well have been passed over for a registry office in Yorkshire. And as a proud Lancastrian, what ‘a miserable little compromise’ that would be.
AV is the precise opposite of what the country needs so make sure your vote counts and reject it on 5 May.
