Jake Berry MP to turn down MPs’ Pay rise
Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale & Darwen, stuck to his earlier promise this week by voting not to accept a recommended pay rise.
The independent Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB), which is responsible for setting the wages of public officials, had proposed that MPs receive a 1% boost to their earnings in 2011-2012. Since Parliamentarians handed over responsibility for determining their own pay three years ago, any suggested rises would take place automatically.
Jake, however, proved that he is in touch with his constituents by expressing shock and dismay at the suggestion. He commented:
‘It is outrageous that MPs should expect a pay rise at this time of financial crisis. Thanks to the scandalous economic incompetence of the previous Government, public sector workers earning more than £21,000 p.a. will be subject to a two-year pay freeze.
A public sector pay freeze means what it says on the tin, and Members of Parliament should be no exception.
On behalf of all the hard-working people of Rossendale & Darwen, I promised to stand by the Government and fight this insensitive move by the SSRB and that is exactly what I did.’
